Every time I post about spreadsheets, someone says the same thing. That they are not a numbers person. That formulas are for people who trained in this. That one wrong click will break the whole sheet.
None of it is true, and it was never true. It is a belief picked up somewhere years ago, and it costs people hours every week.
Filtering is the proof. You do not need a formula to pull the open records from the North region out of a list of thousands. You click the arrow on Region, tick North, press OK, and do the same on Status. Both conditions stay on. You see three records out of twelve, and nothing has been deleted.
Clear the filters and every row comes back. That surprises people more than anything else on the sheet.
The FILTER formula does the same job in one cell, so the answer can sit on another sheet and update on its own. Written out as one long line it looks like something you need training for. Broken into five steps, with the star between the brackets explained and the errors named, it is a lot smaller than it looks.
So I put all five methods in one file, with 12 sample records, so you can try each one on your own screen in a minute. Keep it open while you work and use whichever method fits the list in front of you.
